Basketball Stats Parents Should Track: The Full Picture

Your kid scored 12 points last night. That sounds great. But here's what you're missing: Did they have 8 assists? A steal? Were they a liability on defense?

Basketball stats are more than points. Here's what to track and why it matters.

The Headline Stats

Points (PPG)

Obvious. But context matters. 12 points in 20 minutes is different from 12 points in 5 minutes off the bench. Track minutes played alongside points.

Assists (APG)

Shows playmaking. A player with 4 assists is running the offense. A player with 0 assists is scoring in isolation. Both can be valuable, but they're different roles.

Rebounds (RPG)

Effort and box-out skills. A 5'8" guard with 6 rebounds worked for it. Rebounds show who's fighting for possessions.

The Defensive Stats

Steals

Active hands. High steals mean your kid is engaged defensively. Low steals can mean poor positioning or lack of effort.

Blocks

Paint defense. Blocks show a player is protecting the rim. Not all positions will have high blocks, but it's a good defensive indicator.

Turnovers (TO)

Decision-making and ball security. High turnovers mean sloppy play. Low turnovers mean smart, controlled offense.

The Efficiency Stats

Field Goal Percentage (FG%)

A player who scores 10 points on 8 shots is more efficient than one who scores 10 on 15 shots. Track it.

Free Throw Percentage (FT%)

Clutch play. Free throws are earned. High FT% shows your kid gets to the line and finishes under pressure.

Plus/Minus (+/-)

The big-picture stat. Are the team's points going up or down when your kid is on the court? That's the real measure of contribution.

What to Actually Log After Each Game

Don't go crazy. Pick 5-6 stats that matter for your kid's position and role:

Guards: Points, Assists, Steals, FG%, Turnovers, +/-

Forwards: Points, Rebounds, Steals, Blocks, FG%, +/-

Centers: Points, Rebounds, Blocks, FG%, FT%, +/-

The Payoff

Track these stats over a season and you'll see trends. Your kid's efficiency improving. Their role changing. Their +/- climbing. That's the story of a season worth keeping forever.
