Hockey Stats Explained

For Skaters

Goals (G)

Pucks scored. The headline stat. Track trends across the season.

Assists (A)

Last two players to touch the puck before a goal. Combined with goals = points.

Points (P)

Goals + Assists. Most useful for comparing overall offensive production across the season.

Shots on Goal (SOG)

Shots that reached the goalie. Shows effort and aggression. Rising SOG = improving offense.

Plus/Minus (+/-)

On ice for a goal you score (+1) or give up (-1). Best two-way hockey indicator.

Hits & Blocks

Physical engagement. Shows defensive effort and toughness—coaches love it.

For Goalies

Saves (SV)

Shots the goalie stopped. The raw work stat.

Goals Against (GA)

Shots that went in. Track the trend—lower is better.

Save Percentage (SV%)

Saves ÷ (Saves + GA). .900+ is solid; .920+ is excellent; .940+ is elite.

Goals-Against Average (GAA)

Total GA ÷ games played. 2.0-2.5 is average; under 2.0 is strong.

Shutouts

Games with zero goals against. Rare and worth celebrating.

Why Hockey Parents Track Stats

See Growth

Stats show what progress looks like. A kid who averaged 0.8 PPG in October and 1.2 in February grew. The card proves it.

Celebrate Performance

A 5-2 loss hurts less when the card shows a .920 save percentage. Stats separate your kid's play from the team result.

Talk to Coaches

"My kid wants more ice time" is anecdotal. "Here are their stats" is data. Coaches respect that.

Keep Memories

Five years from now, you won't remember a random Tuesday game. A trading card from the tournament? That stays forever.
